Should I Book An Engagement Shoot?

Updated: Oct 17, 2019

As a photographer I get asked this a lot and my answer is simple, do you want to?

There's no point in coming along to a session if that's really not your thing, you might want a photographer for your wedding day because there's so much going on and you want to capture your day of course, but a 1 on 1 session might not be for you and that's absolutely fine too, there's no pressure.

There are however many benefits of having an engagement session before your big day. The first being if you have any pre-wedding nerves about the photography these will be a thing of the past by the time the session has ended. You would have gotten to know your photographer better and vice versa.  Hopefully you would have all gotten along super well and you will have more confidence and also a better idea of how your photographer will be with you both on your day.

Secondly you will have very little in the way of surprises when you get the photos back on your wedding day, as you would have already received a great selection from your engagement session knowing your photographers exact style from the way your session was shot to how the photos have been edited. This means you won’t be worrying on the day because you know what to expect.

Another great reason is, if you do have any concerns with your images you have time to voice them before your day. You might prefer a slightly different angle, or you felt too posed and what you're really after is something a bit more natural. And don't see this as a negative, it’s really great to have the opportunity to go through this with your photographer before your big day, this insures you are both on the same page on your big day and that your photographer ultimately can deliver exactly what you are after.

So, if you're deciding on whether or not to go for the engagement shoot, ask yourself if it’s what you both really want first and let that be the key to making your decision. Photography is always a two-way thing, you have to want to have your pictures taken and therefore if you know you hate having your pictures taken and won’t like them, then perhaps avoid an engagement shoot. However, if you are up for a bit of fun and getting to know your photographer a bit better before your big day, then honestly, I couldn't think of a better way!
